Certain actions can greatly increase the risk of being injured in a serious collision. Speeding has been a prevalent factor in deadly car crashes across the United States and has been cited in nearly one-third of fatal traffic accidents over the past twenty years. Our busy schedules may pressure us to exceed the speed limit every now and then, but New Mexico drivers are notorious for speeding. The state ranks twelfth in the nation for high-speed crashes.
A reckless driver is one who puts themselves and others in danger by their negligence on the road. Unfortunately, even safe drivers are never completely safe, and reckless drivers are responsible for nearly half of traffic fatalities reported each year. New Mexico motorists often engage in negligent behavior on the road, and the state ranks fifth in the nation for careless driving accidents according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
A serious car crash can take place in a matter of seconds, leaving victims suffering from life-threatening injuries or worse. An accident is reported every 12 minutes in New Mexico, and someone is injured in a collision in the state every 26 minutes on average. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that New Mexico has one of the highest vehicle fatality rates in the nation, and drivers in the state have a bad reputation for engaging in reckless actions behind the wheel.
A busy intersection is common in large cities like Albuquerque, and most drivers in New Mexico likely do not think twice about traveling at a crossing. However, statistics indicate that the risk of a crash is increased while at an intersection. Intersections are the location of nearly 40% of reported car crashes and one-quarter of fatal accidents in the United States each year. The majority of intersection collisions involve left-hand turns.
When a pedestrian is hit by a car, it is already traumatic enough. When the at-fault driver flees the scene, it means that the wounded victim is unable to obtain the medical help he or she needs to make a full recovery. Sadly, hit-and-run fatalities are rising rapidly across the United States. In 2015, a hit-and-run took place every 43 seconds on average, resulting in over 737,100 accidents nationwide.
Deadly pedestrian accidents are on the rise across the United States, despite an overall decrease in roadway fatalities. In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrians killed in motor vehicle collisions, with an estimated fatality occurring every 88 minutes. That year, New Mexico had the highest pedestrian fatality rate in the nation according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association.
