Common Types of New Mexico Vehicle Accidents

According to a recent Annual Traffic Crash Report issued by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, a motor vehicle accident happens about every 11 minutes in New Mexico. Tragically, the quick impact of a motor vehicle collision may produce catastrophic injuries, death, and severe repercussions for accident victims.

What's more, per recent traffic analysts' data, 2021 was the deadliest year on New Mexico roadways. The overall number of traffic fatalities increased considerably in the current year compared to previous years.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation and other major agencies have identified a number of worrisome statistics, along with how authorities plan to address these dismal numbers.

Thankfully, if you have been injured in a vehicle accident, the Albuquerque car accident lawyers at Will Ferguson & Associates can assist you in obtaining the necessary compensation to pay your medical expenses, lost earnings, pain or suffering, and more. Our staff works tenaciously for the financial recovery that our clients deserve.

In the meantime, it's essential that drivers in New Mexico stay abreast of the latest accident statistics and understand more about how and why these incidents occur.

Most Frequent Types of New Mexico Accidents

These are some of the most prevalent kinds of auto accidents in New Mexico:

  • Rear-end collisions: A rear-end collision may occur when a vehicle follows another car too closely or is not paying attention. The resulting injuries may be significant. Typically, this sort of event causes whiplash, back injuries, and face injuries.
  • Head-on crashes: Head-on collisions are among the most hazardous forms of accidents. This sort of collision is often caused by a car traveling in the wrong direction down a roadway or by a distracted or tired driver crossing the median. Frequently, head-on accidents result in severe injuries or even death.
  • T-bone accidents: T-bone accidents, also known as side-impact collisions, often occur when a motorist fails to yield to another vehicle at an intersection. A driver's poor turn may also often lead to T-bone collisions. Because the sidewalls of a vehicle have less structural protection, T-bone collisions often result in severe injuries.
  • Rollover wrecks: A rollover occurs when a vehicle flips onto its side or its top. Rollovers are among the most deadly sorts of auto accidents and have a higher death rate than other types of collisions on average. Despite the fact that rollovers often involve a single car, another motorist is frequently to blame. For instance, a vehicle may abruptly swerve or change lanes to avoid colliding with an irresponsible driver, only to roll over as a result.
  • Single-vehicle accidents: Single-vehicle accidents involve just one vehicle being damaged. Similar to rollover incidents, the driver of the involved vehicle is not necessarily culpable for the collision. An accident may be caused by the careless conduct of another motorist or by other factors, such as a road problem or a defective vehicle. Injured passengers in a single-vehicle collision may be eligible to file a claim against the driver's insurance coverage.

Principal Causes of Car Crashes

Common Types of New Mexico Vehicle AccidentsDetermining the cause of an automobile accident is essential for identifying the at-fault party and receiving compensation from them. Multiple variables may often contribute to an automobile collision, such as when one driver is inattentive, and another is speeding. These circumstances may result in numerous persons being held responsible for an accident.

The most frequent causes of automobile accidents in New Mexico are:

  • Speeding
  • Inattentive driving
  • Driver fatigue or tiredness
  • Reckless driving
  • Tailgating
  • Driving when impaired by drink or drugs (DUI), which is particularly prevalent in New Mexico
  • Changing lanes in a risky manner
  • Not yielding to another motorist
  • Violation of traffic signs or lights
  • Improper or illegal turns
  • Inability to modify speed for adverse weather
  • Dangerous highways
  • Motor vehicle defects or inadequate upkeep
  • Sudden medical emergencies on the part of a driver

Common Injuries in Car Wrecks

It can be devastating to experience the aftereffects of a car accident, to say the least. But you may be entitled to substantial compensation if you are wounded in a vehicle accident. The amount of compensation you may seek mostly depends on the severity of your accident-related injuries. Among the most frequent forms of injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents are:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Neck injuries and whiplash
  • Nerve injury
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Amputations, bone breaks, and fractures
  • Internal injuries
  • Crush wounds
  • Paralysis
  • Facial wounds, scars, and deformity
  • Cutaneous wounds and skin avulsions
  • Burns

Clearly, auto accidents have a horrible impact on victims and occur all too frequently, particularly in Albuquerque. According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Albuquerque has the greatest number of accidents of any city in the state. If you were injured in a collision, the seasoned automobile accident attorneys at Will Ferguson & Associates could assist you by:

  • Conducting a thorough inquiry into the accident.
  • Determining the accident's cause, who is at fault, and the potential compensation sources.
  • Collecting and analyzing all relevant evidence, including police reports, medical data, and eyewitness accounts.
  • Employing specialists who can give supporting views and testimonies.
  • Negotiating with all interested parties and their respective insurance carriers.
  • Representation in court, if required.

Keep in mind that you have a limited amount of time to file a lawsuit if someone's carelessness caused you harm. You have just three years from the date of your injuries to launch a personal injury case in New Mexico. It may be even shorter in some instances, like if you're filing a claim against a government institution, you have. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding your crash, an experienced New Mexico vehicle accident attorney can evaluate the facts underlying your claim and explain the possible compensation options.

Fatal Truck Accidents in New Mexico

Rio Rancho, NM – Fatal Truck Crash on Highway 528 Takes One Life near Corrales RdEach year, an estimated 43,000 motor vehicle accidents occur in the state of New Mexico. Of these, nearly 1500 of them involve semi-trucks. When semi-trucks are involved in motor vehicle accidents, the chances of victims suffering fatal injuries are dramatically increased.

In 2021 alone, more than 450 people died as a result of automobile accidents in the state of New Mexico. In many cases, these fatal collisions are a result of driver negligence. When drivers engage in reckless actions, particularly while behind the wheel of a semi-truck or a large commercial vehicle, the chances of a fatal car accident are increased significantly.

There are many factors that contribute to the high rate of fatal truck accidents here in New Mexico and across the United States. Some of the leading causes include:

  • Driver fatigue: Truck drivers typically work long hours and do not get enough rest. This can lead to them becoming fatigued, which can make them more likely to get into an accident.

Fatal Car Crashes in New Mexico

Carlsbad, NM – Earl Burton Fatally Injured in Head-On Crash on Highway 62/180Fatal crashes in New Mexico take the lives of hundreds of people annually. Unfortunately, any crash has the potential to cause severe and fatal injuries to those involved. However, a significant portion of fatal crashes that take place in our state are head-on collisions. Head-on collisions often occur when one driver crosses the center line into oncoming traffic. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but most often, it is due to driver inattention or distraction. Regrettably, alcohol plays a major role in a lot of accidents that occur here in the state of New Mexico.

In New Mexico, alcohol is a leading cause of fatal traffic collisions. In fact, nearly 40% of all traffic fatalities in the state involve an alcohol-impaired driver. There are a number of ways that alcohol can contribute to a crash. First, it impairs judgment and motor skills, making it more difficult to operate a vehicle safely.

Second, driving while impaired significantly increases the risk of aggressive or reckless behavior behind the wheel. Additionally, it lowers inhibitions and reduces the likelihood that drivers will use seat belts or other safety precautions. This can lead to more severe or fatal injuries in the event of a collision

All of these factors come into play when alcohol contributes to a fatal crash in New Mexico. If you have been wounded in such a collision, or if you have lost a loved one, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses and some of the expenses you face. A Carlsbad wrongful death lawyer can help you understand your rights and the legal options available to help your family move forward.

The Causes of Pedestrian Accidents in New Mexico

Recent information from traffic researchers in our state indicates that 2021 was the deadliest year on New Mexico roads. In comparison to prior years, the total number of road deaths climbed dramatically during the current year.

Below, we will review briefly some of the troubling data noted by the New Mexico Department of Transportation and other key agencies, as well as how officials intend to address these bleak figures.

At Will Ferguson & Associates, our Albuquerque automobile accident attorneys understand that establishing the facts of a case is essential to helping accident victims get compensation for their injuries. Similarly, knowing the important facts and data about vehicle accidents in New Mexico helps illuminate why such tragedies are so prevalent in our state. Here are some of the most relevant data points on vehicle accidents in New Mexico.

Statistics on New Mexico Pedestrian Accidents

In 2021, there were an astounding 470 traffic deaths on New Mexico highways. This is a considerable rise from the state's 2019 total of 425 road fatalities. According to NMDOT spokesman Jeff Barela, speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving were the most prevalent causes of fatal accidents in New Mexico during the last year. Tragically, traffic deaths in 2021 were the highest in at least a decade.

The number of traffic-related deaths caused by drunk driving did decline in the meantime. New Mexico saw 176 alcohol-related collisions in 2019. By 2021, that number had dropped to 110. Alcohol-related traffic deaths were also at their lowest rate in two decades, with Barela citing a 26% decline in drunk driving-related collision fatalities in the previous year.

Still, a recent insurance survey determined that New Mexico's drivers were the second worst in the country owing to the state's high proportion of reckless and inebriated drivers.

In addition, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures for New Mexico seem to support these conclusions. According to NHTSA statistics, New Mexico ranked fifth for the most incidents of reckless driving, twelfth for speeding, and tenth for the most arrests for driving under the influence.

Pedestrian Fatality Data in New Mexico

When data concentrate just on drunk driving in New Mexico, it is evident that the state has a significant public safety concern. According to a 2014 research published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Mexico's drinking epidemic is unprecedented.

The state has had more alcohol-related fatalities per capita than any other state. For instance, 51.2 per 100,000 people die from alcohol-related causes in New Mexico.

Obviously, these figures translate into a high incidence of drunk driving accidents. Alcohol contributed to 1,037 collisions in 2015 that resulted in injury or fatalities.

Both the government and individual drivers are responsible for improving these dismal traffic mortality figures. The government may implement new policies to decrease traffic accidents, enforce existing rules and regulations more effectively, and enhance driver education programs. Drivers may contribute by abiding by traffic regulations, avoiding distractions like texting and chatting on the phone, and avoiding drink and drugs before getting behind the wheel.

If you were injured in a vehicle accident in New Mexico that a drunk driver caused, you might be entitled to compensation for your losses, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If your loved one was murdered in an accident caused by a drunk driver, you might be eligible for compensation for extra losses, such as funeral and burial expenses.

When Do Pedestrian Accidents Usually Occur?

The New Mexico Department of Transportation's 2015 Community Report displays an intriguing five-year pattern regarding accidents and seasons. Namely, December is the highest month for crashes during the span from 2011 to 2015.

The average number of accidents in December over the last five years is 3,977 each month. Only October is even close, with an annual average of 3,846 accidents. In every single year, with the exception of 2013, December was by a significant margin the most accident-prone month.

Several reasons may be at play here, including increased Christmas traffic and cold weather. Regardless of the cause, it is clear that December is the most dangerous month for automobile accidents in New Mexico.

Causes of Pedestrian Accidents in New Mexico

Given New Mexico's rate of DUI accidents, one might be excused for assuming that drunk driving is the major cause of accidents in the state. Instead, driver inattention or distraction is the most frequent human error that leads to an accident.

Driver distraction was listed as a significant factor in 21,894 of the state's 62,787 accidents caused by human error in 2015. The second most prevalent cause of collisions in 2015 was the failure to yield the right-of-way, which contributed to 6,602 incidents.

Teen Drivers in New Mexico

Furthermore, teen drivers are most likely to be involved in vehicle accidents across the country and in New Mexico.

Young drivers have less experience behind the wheel, making them more prone to making errors. The all-too-common distraction of young drivers exacerbates this fact.

For example, in 2015, the 20 to 24 age group was involved in the most collisions. Moreover, 10,124 of the 83,415 drivers involved in incidents in the state were within this age bracket. The 15-19, 25-29, and 30-34 age groups were equally susceptible to causing or being involved in collisions. However, the number of drivers involved in accidents beyond the age of 35 falls dramatically.
