Taos, NM (August 20, 2021) - On Thursday, August 19, the passenger of a vehicle died after being involved in a serious collision in the Taos area.
The driver of the car, Joshua Maestas, allegedly fled from Taos officials, starting a high-speed chase. Maestas was reportedly traveling southbound on NM-68 when he crashed near the intersection of NM-518. The motorist was reportedly trying to take a shortcut when he crashed into the median, causing the car to flip.
A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Nicolas Romero of Taos, was killed in the accident. A third passenger, Angel Rudd, was also injured in the impact. Maestas was taken into custody for being in violation of parole, and the man reportedly showed signs of intoxication at the scene. He was charged with driving under the influence and death by motor vehicle.
