Lea Co, NM (July 7, 2021) - A head-on crash in Lea County on the Fourth of July ended in the death of a Texas man.
Local reports indicated that the collision occurred that night at around 6:06 p.m. on NM-128. A 2019 Ford pickup truck driven by 30-year-old Robert M. Navarrete of Monahans, Texas was traveling eastbound on the highway. Outside of Jal near mile marker 46, Navarrete crossed the centerline into westbound traffic.
The driver crashed head-on with a 2021 Ford pickup truck. Navarrete was taken to a hospital in Kermit, Texas where he was later pronounced dead. The 38-year-old Texas man driving the other vehicle was transported to a medical facility in Kermit before being flown to a hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Alcohol is not believed to have played a role in the crash. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly accident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
