Per the latest update from officials on Friday, July 8, the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon fire is currently being controlled as a single blaze by Great Basin Incident Management Team 7, under the direction of incident commander Mike Johnston.
On the northern portion of the fire, crews are cleaning ditches and repairing roads damaged during other suppression efforts. Furthermore, work with landowners continues, including restoring fences damaged during suppression operations, repairing roads, chipping brush, and removing debris from highways and rivers near Holman, Mora, Guadalupe, Chacon, and along New Mexico Highways 418 and 518.
On the west side of the fire, hand and dozer lines are still being repaired. In the southern area of the fire, excavators continue to restore the dozer line. Moreover, a 20-person hand team and overhead personnel are continuing to scout, verify, and repair sites specified on the east side of the fire area. Personnel and various teams also continue to survey areas affected by the fire and will begin restoration efforts when it is safe to do so.
The firefighters assigned to the fire are ready to help the local units and the U.S. Forest Service with any new flames that break out in the vicinity. Due to the decline in fire activity, fire resources will continue to be released from the area.
Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Suppression Efforts Continue
In the meanwhile, both the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests continue to enforce area limitations. These restrictions are in place for the protection of public health and safety in the case of debris flows and flash floods, as well as for continuing wildfire suppression repair works. The wildfire suppression repair activities include, but are not limited to, the removal of dangerous trees, the repair and stability of roads, the employment of heavy equipment, and the repair of fire lines.
In addition, there is still a risk of precipitation this weekend, with a possible rainstorm on Saturday followed by a drier day on Sunday. Next week, there will be an increase in the likelihood of floods and debris flows, although the overall risk remains low. Nonetheless, this risk would grow significantly if a powerful, slow-moving storm moved over a high-severity burn region.
