Artesia, NM - Mittie Runyan Dies in Crash with Semi-Truck on US-285

Artesia, NM (December 10, 2021) - A woman was killed following a collision involving a commercial truck outside of Artesia on Monday morning, December 6. The fatal crash occurred on US-285 near milepost 82 at around 10:30 a.m.

Local reports revealed that two NMDOT vehicles were working in the right lane of US-285 SB. A 2007 Peterbilt CMV, driven by a 45-year-old man, rear-ended one of the vehicles. The impact caused the NMDOT truck to crash into the other NMDOT vehicle.

The driver of the first NMDOT truck, 58-year-old Mittie Runyan, was killed in the accident. Two other workers were able to jump out of the way to avoid the crash. Runyan was transported to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas where she was later pronounced dead.

An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly accident is underway.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mittie Runyan at this time.

Deadly Trucking Accidents in New Mexico

Someone is killed or seriously injured every 15 seconds in a tractor-trailer or semi-truck collision. In 2019, passengers in automobiles were involved in roughly 67% of fatal semi-truck collisions. In New Mexico, one out of every 30 trucking accidents results in a fatality, according to the most recent statistics.

When a loved one dies as a result of another party's negligence, wrongful death lawsuits are filed to help the surviving family members. Regrettably, obtaining that compensation is frequently more difficult said than done. The fact that the victim died does not absolve the at-fault party of blame. Insurance companies frequently try to shift blame when someone is at fault in a fatal accident. The person or entity responsible for the untimely death of a loved one should compensate the deceased's family for accident-related expenses. This is something that only an Artesia car crash accident lawyer with years of experience helping victims pursue wrongful death claims can do.
