Carlsbad, NM (April 28, 2021) - The identities of the two people killed in a collision in the Carlsbad area on Friday, April 23, have been released by local authorities.

At around 10 p.m. that evening, emergency responders were called to the scene of the fatal crash, located at the corner of Kircher Street and San Jose Boulevard. Initial reports revealed that 31-year-old Rycke Underwood of Quitman, Texas was traveling through the intersection when he crashed into an SUV. One of the passengers, 52-year-old Bernice Duque of Loving, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Underwood was also taken to a local medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries. Prior to the impact, Underwood reportedly refused to stop for a police officer before accelerating into the intersection and crashing into the SUV.
